David was known as a man after God's own heart. But his position in the family as the youngest son was so low that he wasn't even called to meet with Samuel (1 Samuel 16:11). When Goliath threatened the Israelites, David was simply tending sheep. But God had a better plan for him. Even though we may not be fighting giants in our daily lives, we can take these lessons from David into our daily lives:
1. Whatever job you have, do your absolute best
- 1 Samuel 17: 15 As a faithful son, David did what was asked of him by tending his father's sheep.
2. Follow orders
- 1 Samuel 17: 17 - 20 Jesse asked his son, David, to take food to his brothers. By following his dad's orders, David was in the right place at the right time.
3. Be aware of your competition
- 1 Samuel 17: 26 By being aware & asking the right questions, David learned of Goliath. "Goliath" can come in any form, its always better to know who is trying to attack us.
4. Speak up and be recognized
- 1 Samuel 17: 32 David announced to Saul that he would fight Goliath. He knew in his heart he could do it, so he told the person in charge.
5. Don't let management underestimate you
- 1 Samuel 17: 33 Saul reminded him that he was only a boy.
6. Know your talents
- 1 Samuel 17: 34 David let Saul know that even though he has only been watching his father's sheep, he did manage to kill lions and bears with his bare hands when they carried off a sheep from his flock.
7. Use the correct tools for success
- 1 Samuel 17: 39 - 40 David knew the armor that Saul gave him would not work. He choose five smooth stones from the stream and put them in the pouch of his Shepard's bag and, with a sling in his hand approached Goliath.
8. Do your work for the glory of God!
- 1 Samuel 17: 45-47 The battle belongs to the Lord!
Just as David was successful against Goliath, I pray that you use these lessons to be successful in your job.
